‘Sunrise Ruby’ breaks three records at Sotheby’s Geneva

Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels & Noble Jewels auction fetched SFr149.9 million or approximately HK$1,272.9 million, which is the highest total for any jewellery auction, on 12 May 2015. A ring, called ‘Sunrise Ruby’, set with a 25.59-carat Burmese ruby hit three world records when it was sold for SFr28.25 million or approximately HK$239.96 million.

This top lot ruby ring, one of four jewels in a private collection of four Cartier pieces, is an untreated pigeon’s blood red-coloured stone which not only set a new world auction record for a ruby, but also new records per carat for a ruby and for a jewel by Cartier.

Another highlight, the second top lot, went to an 8.72-carat fancy vivid pink diamond ring, ‘The Historic Pink Diamond’, believed to have been part of the collection of Princess Mathilde, niece of NapoleonⅠ, which was sold for SFr14.81 million or approximately HK$125.80 million.
