Gemstones highlighted at AsiaWorld- Expo

The forth day attending the HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show which is held at AsiaWorld- Expo from 3 – 7 March.

According to the major coloured gemstone suppliers, the price of high quality heated ruby and emerald had increased 5 to 10 percent, while the price of corundum such as fancy colour sapphires stayed stable for per carat comparing to last year. A lot of semi-precious gemstomes  such as pink quartz, topaz, spinel and etc with very high clarity enjoyed a higher demand by Chinese buyers. "As part of the reason is that jewellery with cutting edged designs and fashionable colours become popular among Chinese consumers in urban cities," said by the exhibitors.

Diamond prices also went higher comparing to last year. For example, according to some buyers, the price of high quality one-carat to 1.5 carat diamonds increased 10 to 20 percent comparing to two years ago, while the price of half carat diamonds haven’t see an obvious increase.

Along with the show, industry experts also gather for seminars specialized in coloured gemstones in terms of production and market development.

Vincent Pardieus, senior manager of field gemology, GIA Laboratory Bangkok introduced three major types of ruby including marble related rubies from Mogok in Burma, Basalt related rubies from Thailand and Cambodia border and amphibole related rubies from Mozambique.

According to Pardieus, Thailand managed to become the world's major source for ruby in less than five years' time in the past. There are a lot of Mozambique rubies in the Bangkok market. While in the consuming market such as Europe, most stones in the trade are probably from Burma instead of from Mozambique.

As coloured gemstones was heated up in the China market from 2008, they have been keeping a stable increasing demand by now. Representatives from International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) gave a “Coloured Gemstone Overview and maket Development, with a Focus on Tanzanite, Brazil and the China Mainland”.
