GIA invalidates altered grading reports

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has invalidated grading reports for over a thousand diamonds submitted to their laboratory in India. The reports were altered by a third party who gained unauthorised access to GIA’s database. Click here to see the list of invalidated reports.

GIA said on a press release dated 23 October 2015 that they strongly request that anyone in possession of any of these diamonds or grading reports return them immediately to them for examination.

The grading report discrepancies were detected by GIA’s internal controls which followed by an investigation together with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) who supports GIA databases. The investigation indicates that one or more former employees of GIA or TCS had gained unauthorised remote access to alter grades before reports were printed and sent to clients. The results of investigation were made known to law enforcement agencies in India.

Most of the diamonds were submitted in India. Many of those were graded in full or in part at other GIA locations including Carlsbad and New York, said GIA. Some stones were submitted directly to the laboratory in Carlsbad. The diamonds were submitted between November 2014 and September 2015; approximately 900 were submitted in July and August.
