US holiday sales grow 8%

The US retail sales registered a 7.9-percent grow during the holiday season from Black Friday to Christmas Eve, according to a Mastercard survey which tracked sales using cards, cash and cheques, excluding automobiles and gasoline purchases.

During the season e-commerce grew 20 percent from a year before, the report said. Seventy percent of US consumers said they do more research online than before.

From November to December 2015, retail sales excluding auto and gas increased 4.6 percent compared to the same period in 2014.

“We saw very promising trends. The double-digit growth in furniture sales, for instance, shows that consumers are willing and able to splurge on big-ticket items. E-commerce’s rise is a solid indication of an empowered and savvy shopper. We’ll be watching to see if this behavior continues into 2016,” said a Mastercard spokesman.
