CUHK hosts public seminar on gold working techniques of ancient China

Co-organised by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Shanxi Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, and Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited, a public seminar “Gold Working Techniques of Ancient China” was held on 14 January 2016 at CUHK, attracting about 200 participants.

The seminar featured three key speakers including Max Lam, creative director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery, Yang Junchang, researcher of Shanxi Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, and Xu Xiaodong, associate director of the Art Museum of CUHK. They shared the research results of ancient China’s gold working techniques from different perspectives, such as the detection analysis on gold antiques with modern technology and experimental reconstruction of antique techniques.

According to the seminar’s press release, gold is universally valued as a symbol of wealth and status. It is also one of the few precious metals that has been exploited and utilised by mankind down the ages. However, the techniques of ancient Chinese gold working still remain unclear. Thus, the seminar aimed to collaboratively present an interdisciplinary research on the techniques of ancient Chinese gold working through the perspectives of art history, scientific examination and goldsmith practices.

This seminar is the first activity co-organised by the three parties. In 2016, they will continue to carry out in-depth investigation and technological analysis. The final research results will be presented through special exhibitions, catalogues, and seminars in the beginning of 2017 to the public.
