India’s Polished Diamond Exports May 2016 rise 13%

According to the provisional data released by The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), exports of cut and polished diamonds from India reflect improved sentiment in the market registering a 13.24-percent increase year-on-year for the month of May 2016, with the country exporting US$1.97 billion worth of goods as compared to the US$1.74 billion exported in the same month a year ago.

Overall exports in May 2016 from the gem and jewellery sector stood at US$3.32 billion, a growth of 29.43 percent over the US$2.57 billion exported in the same month the previous year. Gold jewellery exports (studded and plain) in the month rose by 48.3 percent to US$801 million as against US$540.12 million a year earlier. Exports of silver jewellery in May 2016 rose to US$369.42 million as compared to US$121.55 million last year. Growth in the coloured gemstone segment in May 2016 stood at 18.34 percent with total exports standing at US$32.14 million compared to US$27.16 million a year earlier.

During the month, roughdiamond imports increased by 15.09 percent in value terms to US$1.52 billion from US$1.32 billion the previous May. In volume terms, 12.11 million carats of rough were imported during the month, a rise of 9 percent compared with the imports of 11.11 million carats during May 2015. Imports of cut and polished diamonds rose to US$249.06 million in May 2016 from US$195.48 million a year earlier.
