The inaugural ‘2017 International Design Competition on Trendy Fei Cui Jewellery’ and ‘Hong Kong Students Design Competition on Fei Cui Jewellery’ kicked off at a launch ceremony on 4 March 2017 during the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. The two contests are now inviting entries till 1 June 2017.
The 2017 International Design Competition on Trendy Fei Cui Jewellery is considered one of the most important and high-calibre contests of a kind in the Greater China region. It is jointly-organised by influential industry organisations including National Gems & Jewelry Technology Administration Center (NGTC), Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC), Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA), Republic of China Gemological Association and Taiwan Creative Jewellery Designer Association, and co-organised by three leading publishers in the trade in the region namely China Gems Magazine, Hong Kong Jewellery Magazine Ltd and Taiwan’s Jewelry World Magazine. Apart from the impressive line-up of organising parties, the contest is sponsored by HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, Taipei Jewellery Fair and China International Jewellery Fair (Beijing), and strongly supported by Macau Goldsmiths’ Guild, Hong Kong Jade Association, Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association Ltd, The Kowloon Pearls, Precious Stones, Jade, Gold & Silver Ornament Merchants Association, and Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory Limited.
Well-attended by industry leaders and journalists from all over the globe, the ceremony was inaugurated by Benedict Sin, chairman of the contest’s organising committee (Hong Kong), Sun Li, vice secretary general of GAC and editor-in-chief of China Gems Magazine, Ken Lo, chairman of HKJJA, Robin Ma, president of Republic of China Gemological Association, Wang Yue Yaw, president of Taiwan Creative Jewellery Designer Association, Lei Chi Fong, president of Macao Goldsmiths' Guild, Benjamin Chau, deputy executive director of HKTDC.
Contestants will compete in four categories: Open Group (Finished Jewellery) with retail price under US$10,000; Open Group (Finished Jewellery) with retail price at or over US$10,000; Open Group (Drawings): Hand-drawn or Computer-aided Design; Student Group (Drawings): Hand-drawn or Computer-aided Design.
Open groups are open to all working designers for a jewellery company and independent jewellery designers, while the student group is for students studying design-related courses.
Besides cash awards, winners will receive a certificate with the autographs of internationally-renowned designers, artists and competition organisers, as well as an invitation to the award presentation held in Beijing in November 2017.
Launched together with 2017 International Design Competition on Trendy Fei Cui Jewellery was the Hong Kong Students Design Competition on Fei Cui Jewellery in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the reunification of Hong Kong with China. Organised by HKJJA and supported by the Business-School Partnership Programme, Education Bureau, Hong Kong Jewellery Designers Association, International Association of Jewellery Merchandize Planning Professionals and International, Jewellery Designer Association, China Gems Magazine, Hong Kong Jewellery Magazine Ltd and Jewelry World Magazine, the contest is an accredited community-organised event for the Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR targeting at (1) local students of Secondary 3 to 6, and (2) post-secondary institutes or design institutes. Hand-drawn or CAD entries are welcome.
The contest is themed ‘Coming of Age’ to encourage students to incorporate their personal experience about the reunification of HKSAR with China into jewellery design. Winners will have an opportunity to join the Chinese Arts and Cultural Inheritance Tour in Beijing to appreciate the love from the motherland and strengthen the understanding of the Mainland and Hong Kong.
