Sotheby’s fine jewels sale in London dated 7 June 2017 achieved £5,171,750 (approximately US$6,578,800), exceeding high pre-sale expectations of £4,183,200.
Featuring a wide selection of contemporary and antique jewellery and decorative accessories, the sale successfully sold 80.1 percent of the lots. A ring set with a 26.29-carat VVS2 cushion-shaped diamond (photo 1) was sold for £656,750. It was originally purchased in the 1980s from a car boot sale for £10 as costume jewellery, according to the auction house.
Other highlights included a Cartier diamond brooch owned by Margaret Thatcher (photo 2) was sold for £81,250. Proceeds will be donated to the Endeavour find supporting the recovery of injured servicemen and women.
