In celebration of the 35th anniversary of Vocational Training Council (VTC), Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) (Lee Wai Lee) will present two exciting exhibitions: “Swiss Accessory and Watch Design by HEAD – Genève” and “In Praise of Silk: Fashion from China National Silk Museum Across Time”, which will run from 9 September, 2017 to 7 January, 2018 and from 30 September, 2017 to 2 December, 2017 respectively.
“Swiss Accessory and Watch Design by HEAD - Genève” is HKDI’s collaboration with the world-renowned Swiss design academy, Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD – Genève). An exquisite collection of refined watches and accessories produced by their students and recent graduates will be showcased at the Experience Centre of HKDI, highlighting not only the renowned Swiss techniques of precision but also craftsmanship instilled by mentors in the field, via collaborations with world-renowned watch and accessory brands such as Baume & Mercier and Piaget. This will be the first time these exhibits will be available for the public in Hong Kong.
A curated master lecture will be offered on 8 September, 2017 by HEAD - Genève Director Jean-Pierre Greff and Nicolas Mertenat, jewellery and watch designer, professor in Product Design/Jewellery and Accessory design and Chair in Watch design. The lecture is open to practitioners in the design and watch and jewellery industries as well as the public, whereby the finest Swiss watch and jewellery design and craftsmanship, as well as the latest style trends, will be introduced.
“In Praise of Silk: Fashion from China National Silk Museum Across Time” will be running from 30 September, 2017 to December 2, 2017 at d-mart of HKDI, the exhibition is a tribute to “mulberry silk”, the fibre that made China famous since historical times. A glimpse into the evolution of the Chinese fashion and silk culture is offered by the collaboration between HKDI's Department of Fashion and Image Design (FID) and the China National Silk Museum, the world’s largest silk museum.
Apart from the precious exhibits from China National Silk Museum, the spacious venue will also display stunning designs from seasoned couturier Barney Cheng, as well as a dazzling selection from renowned fashion label Blanc de Chine. A collection of cheongsam from Cheongsam Connect will also be featured in the exhibition to celebrate the recent announcement of Hong Kong-style cheongsam sewing techniques being inscribed into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong.
A representative from China National Silk Museum and renowned fashion designer Barney Cheng will be attending the opening ceremony of the exhibition on 29 September 2017, which will coincide with the grand opening of HKDI's Fashion Archive.
