Most expensive rough being cut in Israel

22-11-2017

Dubbed the world’s most expensive rough diamond, the 813-carat ‘Constellation’ (photo) is now in Israel undergoing the first stage of processing. The diamond was found in the Karowe mine in Botswana by Canadian-based Lucara Diamond in 2015.

The big stone was brought to Israel for processing at the Synova laser cutting room in the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE). The Synova Laser MicroJet (LMJ) technology enables maximum precision and minimum waste in diamond cutting, reducing damage to expensive rough stones and providing higher yields.

The ‘Constellation’ diamond may unveil one of the world's largest certified flawless diamond. It was sold for US$63 million at a private Sotheby’s auction in 2016 to Dubai-based Nemesis International, making it the most expensive rough diamond sold in recent years. It was later bought by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris.

It is estimated that the 813-carat rough will yield two polished stones of 325-carat and 100-carat, of D color and flawless clarity, the larger of which will be one of the world’s biggest certified flawless diamonds. (Photo courtesy: IDE)
