Auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s put some of the fancy vivid pink diamonds under the hammer in Hong Kong in 2017 and sold for an eye-watering price. We highlighted their headline stones that shaped the year.
Christie’s:
An oval-shaped fancy vivid pink VVS1 diamond named “ The Pink Promise” sold for an incredible hammer price of US$32 million (HK$250 million)in Hong Kong on 28-11-2017. The diamond weighed approximately 14.93 carats, which Christie’s hailed as the “Picasso of the Pink Diamond world” “It’s so elegant.” “It’s a fabulous diamond,” said Rahul Kadakia, international head of jewellery at Christie’s.
The diamond was purchased by Stephen Silver, a renowned gemologist and jeweller in 2013. It was originally a 16.10-carat fancy intense pink. Silver cut the diamond differently to allow more light through it and transformed it into a fancy vivid pink.
Sotheby’s:
On 4-4-2017, Sotheby's set a new world auction record for any diamond or jewel. The Pink Star, an impressive 59.60 carats oval mixed-cut fancy vivid pink and internally flawless diamond, sold for US$71.2 million (HK$553 million) to the renowned jeweller Chow Tai Fook (CTF), with the winning telephone bid placed by Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun, chairman of the company.
The stone is the largest internally flawless fancy vivid pink diamond that GIA has ever graded. It has renamed as “The CTF Pink Star” in memory of the late Dr Cheng Yu-Tung, father of the current chairman and founder of CTF, and marks the esteemed brand's 88th anniversary.
