Toronto-based Fura Gems Inc has recently discovered a 25.97-carat rough emerald (photo) at its emerald mine in Boyacá, Colombia. The emerald is said to be rare and exceptional in terms of size, colour saturation and clarity, according to the Canada-listed mining company.
The new discovery was part of an ongoing bulk sampling programme commenced in late March 2018. The newly-discovered stone has been named ‘ÄRE Emerald’ after a figure in ancient Colombian mythology responsible for the creation of the primary sources of emeralds in Colombia’s Boyacá region, the Fura and Tena mountains as well as the Rio Minero River, according to Fura Gems.
Company president and CEO Dev Shetty said: “We are thrilled with the discovery of this exceptional emerald in these very early stages of our bulk sampling program. The results of this program so far have well exceeded the expectations of our highly qualified management team. The quality of the ‘ÄRE Emerald’ truly represents the opportunity and prestige of the Colombian Emerald, which are the most sought-after emeralds in the world.” Shetty was the former COO of Gemfields.
Since inception, the bulk sampling programme has discovered a total of 1,831 carats of rough emeralds, with 852 carats considered high quality. The programme will continue throughout 2018 with a total of 30,000 tonnes expected to be sampled, said Fura Gems. (Photo courtesy: Fura Gems Inc)
