Rio Tinto has revealed the largest vivid pink diamond ever of its tender history during a preview in Sydney. The 3.14 carats polished diamond, ‘The Argyle Alpha’ (photo 1) will be showcased in Sydney, Hong Kong and New York after the bids closing on 10 October along with 63 pink, red and violet diamonds with a total weight of 51.48 carats. The second largest diamond among the lots is a purplish red diamond, named ‘The Argyle Muse’ (photo 2), weighing 2.28 carats.
Rio Tinto chief executive J-S Jacques indicated that it was the largest vivid pink diamond presented since the tender began in 1984. “Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine is the world’s only source of these highly coveted pink, red and violet diamonds and we expect considerable interest in this year’s collection. The combination of strong demand and extremely limited world supply continues to support significant value appreciation for Argyle pink diamonds,” he added.
