Rio Tinto announced its diamond production jumped 7 percent yoy to 4.6 million carats in the second quarter. The production of Argyle mine rose 13 percent in the first half of 2018 to 7 million carats while Diavik mine, which Rio Tinto owns 60 percent stake, dipped 2 percent to 2.2 million carats. However, the total yield increased 9 percent to 9.2 million carats.
The Canadian miner’s latest project at Diavik, the A21, a fourth pipe located south of the mine’s existing operations, is ahead of schedule and expected to be all set in the fourth quarter. The miner expects to yield 17-20 million carats in 2018. Its production was 21.6 million carats in 2017.
