De Beers has bought a Canadian company, Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. with US$81 million, gaining its control of the Chidliak diamond resource in northern Canada. The deal is waiting for the approval of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
The miner described Chidliak as ‘one of the most attractive undeveloped diamond resources in Canada’. Discovered in 2008, 74 kimberlite pipes are ready at the Chidliak site. Its total production is estimated at over 22 million carats. “The Chidliak resource holds significant development potential and will be an exciting addition to our portfolio,” De Beers Group CEO Bruce Cleaver said. “With a strong outlook for consumer demand, we are seeking new opportunities to invest in our future supply potential and look forward to growing our portfolio in Canada and working with community partners in the Nunavut Territory as we further develop the project,” he added.
