Gemological Institute of America (GIA) discovers crowningsheildite, a newly discovered mineral named in honour of G Robert Crowningshield, a 50-year GIA gemological researcher on lab-grown diamonds. Crowningshieldite was first discovered as an inclusion in two CLIPPIR diamonds from the Letseng mine in Lesotho. It was accepted as a mineral in September by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). Crowningshieldite is a nickel sulfide mineral with a hexagonal crystal structure commonly found in CLIPPIR diamonds.
